about the festival

A warm welcome to our Festival Fleurieu website.

Every two years, dedicated groups of artists and community volunteers from the western side of South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula host Festival Fleurieu (Leafy Sea Dragon Festival 2005 - 2013).

Our most recent festival, the seventh, was held in 2017 when the ten town and rural communities of the Fleurieu Coast celebrated diverse aspects of artistic endeavour, from literature to visual art, from music to environment, from performance to history, through food and wine with a jug or two of local brew.

Life in our region is enriched with our dynamic community of creative artists, historians, environmentalists who reflect and shape the regional identity of the Yankalilla District.  At festival time, our resident community of 4,500 swells threefold with holiday crowds drawn to embrace, join with and enjoy the multi-award winning Festival Fleurieu with a program of both curated and artist initiated events.

We are pleased to announce that our last festival was again a resounding success with fantastic attendances at all events.

After a small recess to catch our breaths, we will soon be starting to think about the next festival in 2019.

If you have any feedback in regard to the last festival, or are interested in joining the planning group to help with the next one,  then please email us.

Festival Fleurieu is presented by a volunteer not-for-profit Incorporated Association and relies on the creative talents of artists, the time of community volunteers, and the generosity of many festival partners who share a passion for all things Fleurieu.

The leafy sea dragon in our local waters is the festival’s inspiring icon; we acknowledge the need to keep our local environment pristine to protect it from human activity. Though as an endangered species  the leafy sea dragon can’t be on show, artists and filmmakers present it in artistic and documentary versions in various exhibitions and venues during the festival.
